Forget everything you know about applesauce. Most of us are used to store-bought applesauce. We might have it here or there as a snack but it’s generally not thought of as anything special, right? Well, let me tell you that homemade crock-pot applesauce is in a league of its own. I started making it a few years ago after I kept seeing recipes for it pop up on Pinterest. Just the whole concept of slow-cooking apples and cinnamon together made me excited for fall so I gave it a whirl. It has been a staple in my kitchen every fall and winter since.
It’s so delicious, natural and simple. The perfect combination of natural sweetness and tartness. Even my mom who is not a cooked/baked apple fan likes this stuff. This is a prime example of how amazing homemade food can taste versus store bought food. And, this recipe calls for just three simple ingredients: apples, lemon and cinnamon.
And, in addition to tasting great, while this applesauce is slow-cooking your whole house will be filled with the most delightful, natural aroma of apples and cinnamon. It’s so much better than any fake a** fall scented candle you could ever buy. 😉 Enjoy!
Homemade Chunky Applesauce
Makes 3 cups
Ingredients:
- 8 apples (I used 6 sweet & 2 tart)
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 piece lemon peel
- 1 cinnamon stick
Directions:
- Peel and cube apples. Add to crock pot with lemon juice, lemon peel and cinnamon stick.
- Cook on low heat for 4 hours. Stirring occasionally.
- Discard cinnamon stick and lemon peel.
- Pour applesauce into medium size bowl. Cool in refrigerator for at least 3 hours before serving.
Cooking Tip:
- Since there’s no added sugar in this recipe I like to use 6 sweet apples to 2 tart apples. I used a combination of organic honeycrisp and organic granny smith. Play around with different apple combinations to see what fits your palate best.
Yum Tedi might make this for family for thanksgiving
